OpenAI Unveils Product to Hone AI Voice and Chat Agents

OpenAI has launched Presence, a managed service designed to deploy voice and chat agents for customer support and outbound sales workflows. Rather than offering a self-serve platform, OpenAI positions Presence as a high-touch consulting engagement, with deployments led by OpenAI's Forward Deployed Engineers and select systems integrators. The product begins with single-job agents, identifies capability gaps post-launch, and proposes iterative improvements—a methodology OpenAI has already validated internally through its own English-language phone support channel. Early adopters including BBVA, SoftBank, and Insurance Australia Group are exploring voice-first customer service experiences, signalling enterprise appetite for conversational AI in regulated and high-touch industries.

The strategic implications for CX teams are substantial. Presence represents OpenAI's deliberate pivot away from competing on platform features alone, instead bundling implementation expertise with the underlying technology—a move that directly challenges the self-serve playbook that vendors like Zendesk and Salesforce have built their empires upon. For teams already running Agentforce or similar platforms, the question becomes whether OpenAI's managed-service model will fragment the agent ecosystem, forcing CX leaders to choose between integrated platforms and best-of-breed voice agents managed through separate vendor relationships. The high barrier to entry—available only to eligible enterprises with dedicated engineering support—also suggests OpenAI is targeting large-scale deployments where implementation risk justifies premium pricing, potentially leaving mid-market teams to rely on existing platform vendors or smaller specialists.

This positioning also exposes a critical gap in the current market: most CX platforms excel at chat but remain immature in voice agent deployment at scale. By pairing agent intelligence with hands-on deployment support, OpenAI is effectively offering what many CX teams lack internally—the operational expertise to move from pilot to production without months of trial-and-error. The real competitive pressure, then, may not be on platform vendors' core functionality but on their ability to offer comparable implementation depth and voice-specific capabilities. Whether Presence becomes a complementary tool within broader CX stacks or a replacement for voice components of existing platforms will largely depend on how seamlessly it integrates with the knowledge systems and permission structures already embedded in enterprise CX infrastructure.
